EDUCATION BACKGROUND IN ASIA Author: OngChungsiew
By nature, most men and women are born adventurous and enterprising. They are eager to set the pace in life and are not afraid of either making new attempts or facing new experiences. A toddler, left on his own, tends to be curious about things new to him, however, adults, particularly the parents, warily and consistently halt their child’s inclination to explore so as to prevent him from getting hurt or injured. As a result, the child’s adventurous nature is hampered even from his growing years.
Prior to the 1970s, jobs were not easy to come by. Under strong parental influence, young people generally had to be contented with whatever career opportunities came their way. Any job offer that generated income to the family would make the parents that generated income to the family would make the parents pleased. At times, some domineering parents even commanded “veto powers” over their children’s decisions where careers were concerned.
Furthermore, young people didn’t get much exposure then. They almost always obeyed their parents. That was the culture in which most young people in Asia were brought up. When the parent said, “You shall study law and become a lawyer” the child would find it hard to say he preferred to be a social worker. Or when the command was. “you shall learn economics and succeed me in our family business”, the child could not possible say “Dad, all I want to do is to become a singer”’ But today, times have drastically changed.
Looking back, Asians generally lived very tough lives. Most of them did hard labour – both males and females. They worked 10 to 12, some 18 hours a day in rain or shine without any rest days and never got paid for overtime work. Seldom did they enjoy the benefits of medical care and other legitimate welfare and all they longed for then were some rest days – with pay.
